About StrongWoods

The StrongWoods Eco-system Restoration Facility funds impactful forest & eco-system assessment & restoration interventions in Côte d’Ivoire.

Côte d’Ivoire is geographically part of the West-African Tropical Rainforest Eco-system, which stretches from Senegal to Togo. This area, also known as the Upper-Guinea Forest, is one of the world’s hotspot of biodiversity (Myers et al, 2000). From global perspective, it is also considered to be a unique and distinct bio-geographical area. However, today this entire area is under serious threat.

Over the last 60 years, this zone has been rapidly losing its original forest cover by an array of opportunistic financial, socio-economic and demographically induced factors (Poorter et al, 2004). Regretfully, there seem to have been an acceleration in the degradation of the forest area as of 2000.

The reduction of forest cover is already having its impact in specific areas on temperature, rainfall and weather patterns. This will lead most likely to adverse climatological conditions in the future. This may have an impact on the capacity to continue producing agricultural products to meet the demand of domestic and export markets (Laederach et al, 2013).
